HONOLULU — Under picture-perfect spring weather, award-winning musician Paula Fuga sang for hundreds of listeners at Hawai‘i Pacific University’s Music on the Mall March 22.
Fuga is a former American Idol contestant who has performed with musicians including Jack Johnson and Ziggy Marley. She shared the stage with vocalist/guitarist Mike Love of Dubkonscious, a popular local reggae musician, at the free concert.
A steady stream of island and reggae-style music had students and mall patrons swaying their heads and swinging their hips. Concertgoers could also enjoy free food served by HPU’s Spirit Club.
“This kind of music gave me good vibes,” said HPU student Kristin Leierer. “I didn’t expect this to be so enjoyable. It’s a good atmosphere.”
She said hopes that HPU can continue bringing more talented acts— like Fuga — for students to enjoy. “She’s really good.”
Fuga exuberantly told HPU students to enjoy their time off next week.
“You’re in the best place,” Fuga said. “Have an awesome spring break!”
