HONOLULU — Incoming Hawai‘i Pacific University freshman Susanna Li of Honolulu has been named the first awardee of the Lloyd M. Fujie Scholarship.
Li, a McKinley High School graduate, will study accounting. She was a member of the McKinley High School Leo Club and has participated in community cleanups, volunteered to help the homeless, and tutored at her school.
Fujie, who died in 2006, was a Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at HPU. He also served 32 years at accounting firm Deloitte & Touche, LLP.
Li said she wanted to study at a private university instead of larger public institutions and looks forward to the small class sizes at HPU.
“I think the students learn better. Instructors can focus more on students and I want to know my professors,” she said.
Li said she aspires to establish an accounting firm, after her time at HPU. That brought a smile to Carol Fujie, who congratulated her on behalf of her late husband.
“She has glowing recommendations,” Carol said.
The Lloyd M. Fujie Scholarship for incoming freshmen is valued up to $10,000, with $2,500 awarded per academic year.
