Valedictory Speakers

Kostelecky, Dianne

President Wright, Members of the Board of Trustees, Faculty, Students, Families and guests.

Good evening.

Fellow classmates as I stand here before you tonight, I am honored to be chosen as a representative of the satellite students. Many of you completed homework while on training exercises. Many attempted to read while taking care of young children in the middle of the night, and we all made sacrifices to get here. Congratulations! We did it! We finally made it through the late night studies, last minute cramming, and final exams.

While we are congratulating ourselves on a job well done, let us not forget those that helped us get this far -- our families, friends, colleagues, instructors, and HPU, without the support of all we would not be here tonight.

We all attended college for a variety of reasons. Some because it was expected. Some because it has been a lifetimes dream and for others because it was time. No matter the reason, we will reap the rewards of achieving this degree.

By choosing to continue our education we have said to the world that we are willing to learn new things regardless of our age and we are ready to make a difference. Let us not stop here. Let us continue learning while encouraging those that follow to do the same.

When Dean Moyer asked me what the hardest thing was in earning my college degree, I had to say algorithms and it made me smile. I remember one of my very first instructors telling us that an algorithm was nothing more than a recipe, if we got the recipe correct, the programming would be a piece of cake. Well fellow graduates, we must of got the recipe right, because we are here. We combined ability, work, determination, dedication and attitude to achieve this goal. When you believe, you can achieve.

There are many people to thank and I wish I could do it individually, but it would take to long, so to all of you that supported, encouraged and tutored me, thank you. Thank you to all of my family that came so far to be here tonight.

Fellow graduates, I would like to leave you with this thought. If we look at the world through the eyes of child, everything is within reach, everything is obtainable, and nothing is an obstacle. Remember to always let the child side of you out; eager to learn and eager to live!

Congratulations and mahalo!
