Exploring the potential of Raman Spectroscopy for the study of marine phytoplankton

Nikolas Isely, a graduate in Marine Biology, worked with Dr. Brian Bozlee, HPU Associate Professor of Chemistry, on a study of marine algae using Raman Spectroscopy.

The objective of this investigation was to discern whether chlorophylls and accessory pigments isolated from marine species can be characterized with Raman spectroscopy. Through their work, Dr. Bozlee and Nikolas hope to find unique Raman Spectra that might be used to characterize, locate and identify of invasive marine species in the coastal waters of the Hawaiian Archipelago.
