HPU Gets Insider Perspective on Diplomacy

The recent APEC conference gave several members of the HPU ‘ohana a unique insider perspective on diplomacy as a team of two students and two alumni joined HPU faculty member, Dr. Carlos Juarez, to support the Peruvian delegation... Christopher Ota, a junior International Relations major, was hired as a chauffer and personal assistant for Mr. Harold Forsyth, Peru’s Ambassador to the U.S.A., and Marcela Gill, a graduate student in Diplomacy and Military Studies from Colombia, joined HPU alumni, Rae Bastoni ,(BS Biology) and Patrick Hallstrom (BA Travel Industry Management) to be trained by U.S. Secret Service agents as chauffers for official motorcade to transport Peru’s leaders and support staff.  Dr. Juarez, a professor of political science and chair of the Department of Social Sciences at HPU, is the Honorary Consul of Peru in Hawaii, and during the APEC meetings served as a translator and interpreter for Peru’s new president, Ollanta Humala. He was able to interact directly with world leaders in various receptions and bilateral meetings, and sat two seats away from President Obama at the APEC Leaders dinner as a whispering interpreter for President Humala.
