Hypertext Literacy: Reading Strategies and Comprehension on the Internet

ABSTRACT: This paper describes how hypertext has changed how we read and how it has influenced the learning of reading. Based on a comparison between the main features of hypertext and those of printed text, I discuss the strategies that can be applied by hypertext readers to interact with the text and navigate through the complex network of hyperlinks. I also comment on the challenges of hypertext reading and offer some teaching implications in order to support novice hypertext readers.

Authenticity in Language Assessment

ABSTRACT: There has been an increase in awareness and research on authentic tests used to measure language learners‟ ability to use the target language in real-life situations. In order to serve this purpose, test designers should place value on au-thenticity in tests. This paper begins with a brief overview of authenticity in language testing. This is followed by a dis-cussion of several characteristics of authenticity in particular types of tests. Finally, some limitations and problems in the implementing of authenticity in language testing are presented
Some Vietnamese Students’ Problems with English Grammar: A Preliminary Study

ABSTRACT: This paper focuses on some common problems encountered by Vietnamese learners of English with tense and aspect, particularly the simple and progressive aspects, the copula be, and adverb positions in verb and adjective phrases. Twenty-five first-year English majors and 47 first-year non-English majors at Kiengiang Community College in Viet-nam participated in this study. The results show that the students have widespread errors in these areas of English grammar.
