He has published numerous journal articles and has presented scholarly papers at international conferences across the world. Teaching experience includes universities in Japan, Russia, and the U.S. Dr. Rugen completed his Ph.D. in 2009 from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. His dissertation draws on discourse analysis methods to examine how Japanese pre-service teachers of English use conversational narratives as rhetorical tools for managing language learner and language teacher identities in talk.
