Languages and Applied Linguistics Department: Chair's Message

Charles Boyer, Ph.D., chair, Department of Languages and Applied Linguistics

Welcome to HPU’s Department of Languages and Applied Linguistics.

Our programs focus on all aspects of communicating across cultures at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  In today’s global society, the importance of effective communication across cultural and linguistic borders has never been greater.  By combining teamwork with a spirit of inquiry and reflection, gained from hands-on experience in and out of the classroom, our faculty and students share and develop the necessary tools to bridge the cultural divide.  Our students, for example, acquire the skills to teach English to speakers of other languages.  Along the way, they have the opportunity to learn or sharpen abilities in any of our six languages.  Through various initiatives, we bring international teachers from around the world to share and develop teaching methods.  Our faculty also play an important role in HPU’s International Bridge Program, which gives international students the necessary skills to begin their study towards a U.S. university degree.

We are truly fortunate to live and learn in such a unique place as Hawaii.  Despite the distances, we discover through our University programs and relationships how interconnected we are, and how these islands bridge multiple cultures and languages.  This diversity is our strength: it provides an ideal environment in which to learn language and language teaching.

I invite you to look through the information on these pages to discover more about our undergraduate and graduate degree programs, majors, minors, certificates and our faculty and students.
