Battle in the American Civil War was heavily influenced by the legacy of Napoleonic warfare, yet the Civil War is often referred to as the first modern or total war. Through this lens of strategy and tactics, the technology, the great military leaders, and key campaigns and battles of the Civil War are analyzed.
