McMahon is the author of How the Mistakes Were Made, published in 2011 by St. Martin's Press. An earlier novel, Chloroquine Dreams, made him a finalist for Amazon's 2008 Breakthrough Novel Award. In 2009 he was nominated for the Pushcart Prize and was runner-up in the Ian McMillan Writing Contest of 2011. He has also published more than 35 essays, short stories, interviews, and reviews.
