The Professional Certificate in Secondary Education is designed to prepare individuals to receive a post-baccalaureate certificate in secondary education. Candidates will be guided by a belief in active, collaborative, reflective, experiential, and transformative learning and will work towards a license in Hawaii and 46 other states in one of the following areas:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
- World Languages
The professional certificate develops educators who are effective teachers ready to excel in diverse educational settings. Certificate holders are experts in their content areas while contributing experience, technology, and resources to the needs of their community.
Students who complete the professional certificate in secondary education have the option to graduate from HPU with a Master of Education degree in Secondary Education by taking three additional courses. Both the certificate and master's degree program work together to meet professional, institutional, and state standards while possessing unique attributes that include:
- Courses offered in the evening and on the weekend
- 16-month licensure program
- 24-month licensure and master degree program
- Collaboration in both public and private secondary schools settings
- Mentor teachers in content area departments
- Culturally diverse classroom experience
- Small classes with individual attention
Teacher candidates must first complete five seminar courses in secondary education, two field experience courses, one subject area concentration course in curriculum and instruction, and the capstone teaching internship and teaching internship seminar courses, for a total of 33 credit hours.
