Dr. Whitfield has thirty years of teaching experience, six as department head, at The University of Louisiana at Monroe, Texas A&M at Kingsville, Texas Tech University, and Tarleton State University. He was a professional journalist in South Texas and North Texas from 1971 to 1977, and a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969. Whitfield taught for the Institute for Shipboard Education's Semester at Sea program fall 2002 semester.
Research interests include progressive era media history, public relations communications issues/trends, and political apologia. Honors include Kappa Tau Alpha Journalism/Mass Communication Honor Society Advisor of the Year, 2002. Fulbright scholar, China and Tibet, 2002. Former president, Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication 2000 - 2001.
