Arts and Humanities Department: Faculty and Staff

SPOTLIGHT!
Featuring the Arts and Humanities’ Staff and Faculty

Ishaque1

Joan Ishaque is the assistant to the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS).  Prior to CHSS, Joan was administrative assistant to Senior VP Hochberg (1994 - 1998) and, later, assistant to the dean for Bob Cyboron, (1998 - 2005) Military Campus Programs.  She returned to HPU in 2007 after a two-year contracting administrative stint for the Stryker Brigade at Schofield Barracks.  Born in Honolulu and raised in Salt Lake, she’s been with HPU for 19 years (it would be 19 years if she included her work study years for Satellite Programs while an undergraduate student).

Joan matriculated from HPU in Computer Information Systems (1993) with a minor in Management.  She was a straight-A student. In 2011, Joan won a Golden Apple for exceptional service.

Joan studied piano during her childhood and once hand built a ceramic pot in junior high school, which was prominently displayed in a student exhibition at a local shopping mall.  She was active in Catholic Club at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace.  She taught religious education, helped feed the homeless, and served as auditor for the Miss Downtown Honolulu Scholastic Pageant.  These days, she can be seen at the beach cheering on her sons in Club Keola O Ke Kai canoe paddling regattas.

Joan loves to eat and to travel.  In fact, she loves combining the two.  She’s had curries in Thailand, bibingka in the Philippines, endless French bread in Tahiti, dim sum in Hong Kong, and fish tacos on the Mexican Riviera.  For Joan, eating is a way to enjoy the company of others.  Everyday, she manages to share a cup of tea with her mother.
