BA in Humanities

HUM“Humanities” is a term used to describe a wide range of academic disciplines which share a common interest in a fundamental question: what does it mean to be a human?

The B.A. in Humanities has been created to advance HPU’s mission of preparing graduates to “live and learn as active members of a global society.” The Humanities offer excellent training for developing the habits and skills essential to living a flourishing life in an interconnected world: the ability to engage in critical reflection of one's own culture and value system, the capacity to empathize with other human beings, and an understanding of varieties of narrative and artistic expression throughout the world. The BA in Humanities program will have institutional value as well as personal, moral and social value in shaping future global citizens.

Today’s global society is one in which diversity and interdependence cannot be ignored.  It is a society in which the global citizen must become increasingly aware of the nature of that diversity and interdependence in order to respond creatively to those challenges that have already begun and will continue. The B.A. in Humanities at HPU has been designed to nourish and inspire global citizens for the twenty-first century. Faculty and students share a learning community guided by that capacity for critical reasoning, compassion, and aesthetic appreciation—skills essential to the realization of our humanity, and the hallmark of the Humanitie major at Hawai'i Pacific University.
