Dr. Penny Pence Smith brings more than four decades of professional marketing and communication experience to her position as Program Chair for Advertising and Public Relations, and Assistant Professor at Hawaii Pacific University.
She has worked with such marketing organizations as J. Walter Thompson Co. and TFB/BBDO advertising agencies, Franson & Associate Public Relations in the Silicon Valley, and been a principal in two marketing consulting firms on the west coast and in the Pacific Rim. She holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication Research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a specialty in health communication, a master’s degree in communication management from the Annenberg School at University of Southern California, and has been on the agenda of major national health care conferences. Throughout her professional career, she has also served as an editor and correspondent for Warner Communications, The New York Times Special Features Syndicate and United Features Syndicate, and was an associate producer/assistant director for Metromedia TV in Los Angeles. In the past dozen years she has served as founder and President of Medical Marketing Management, Inc., a marketing consulting firm working with public health social marketing campaign initiatives, and with hospitals and medical practices in developing communication programs.
Dr. Smith has also been a permanent faculty member for the Department of Dramatic Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has taught in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the School of Public Health Continuing Education Department at UNC, and in marketing workshops at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC.
In the past three years, Dr. Smith has been published in Advance for Radiology and Radiation Oncology, RBMA Bulletin and has been a keynote presenter at the annual Radiology Business Manager’s Marketing Pre-conferences in 2003 and 2005, and has presented at the HPU Faculty Scholarship Day in 2006.
Dr. Smith has a commitment to helping students grasp the substantive theoretical core of strategic communication, and then develop the practical ability to step with ease into the professional world of marketing and communication.
