From Wayne Fernandez, Director of Security and Safety HPU
The U.S. federal Campus Security Act (CSA), passed in 1990, requires all institutions of higher education to have policies and procedures in place regarding crime statistics, reporting, and prevention. Accordingly, a policy was put into effect at HPU, and statistical data has been collected continuously since then.
It is important that HPU students, faculty and staff be aware of, and familiar with, the policy and procedures for reporting any and all criminal activities, or unusual, or emergency situations that occur on or off campus, at university functions, or in university - provided housing.
There were a predominate number of incidents involving theft, usually backpacks and other associated personal belongings. The following statistics indicate the types and number of reported criminal and other unusual incidents for calendar years 2007, 2008, and 2009:

There have been violent incidents happening in schools across America. HPU Security is there for the safety of our students, faculty and staff. When incidents do occur a lockdown procedure will be initiated. Lockdown Procedures have proven to work. Hawaii Pacific University has an expansive campus and not all door locks are the same. Some door knobs do not have an interior lock. HPU Security is responsible for the unlocking and locking of classrooms daily. Doors that do not have an interior lock, security will use a key to unlock and open door. Upon opening door, the key will be used to re-lock door. The classroom door will be left in an open position. Doors that have an interior lock can be locked quickly from the interior by persons using particular classroom.
At the end of classroom instruction, please leave door in the open position for the next class. If a classroom is closed at the end of a class instruction with nobody inside, security will have to unlock class upon request.
Faculty and Staff using classroom, please be aware of your classroom and check the door knob. If the door knob is unlocked and there is no interior lock, please contact security to have the door locked.
On the wall next to the door of each classroom is an emergency contact number of security on both the Windward and Downtown Campus.
Security will be conducting lockdown drills on January 28, 29 and 30, 2013 at both the Windward and Downtown Campus. Notices will be posted on the wall outside the classroom for exact date and time of each campus building. Informacast and Rave Alert will also be put into practice.
